Dental Implants

This guide is to help patients understand what Dental Implants are and feel more informed about their care.

Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. Essentially, they are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Here's a breakdown of how they work:

1. The Implant:

The implant itself is typically made of titanium, a biocompatible material that fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This provides a stable foundation for the artificial tooth.

2. The Abutment:

After the implant has integrated with the bone (which usually takes a few months), a connector piece called the abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment serves as a base for the replacement tooth or teeth.

3. The Crown:

Finally, a custom-made artificial tooth, often called a crown, is placed on top of the abutment. This tooth is designed to look and function like a natural tooth.

Dental implants can replace single teeth or multiple teeth and offer several advantages over other options like dentures or bridges. These benefits include greater stability, better oral health, improved appearance, and long-term durability.

The process can take upto several months from start to finish, as it involves healing and osseointegration, but the results can last a lifetime with proper care.
